The massive U.S. trade deficit is a major cause of the decline of U.S. manufacturing over the past several decades, the high unemployment rate and debilitating budget deficit. Domestic suppliers have watched as large manufacturers have offshored work and well-paying jobs. Offshoring ultimately contributes to waste and instability. Archstone Consulting’s 2009 survey showed that 60% of manufacturers use “rudimentary total cost models” and ignore 20% of the cost of offshoring. Reshoring is actually easier than exporting more, and is potentially the fastest and most efficient way to strengthen the U.S. economy.
The Reshoring Initiative helps manufacturers and suppliers recognize the total cost of ownership, i.e. the profit/loss impact of both offshoring and reshoring. Using the tools offered by the Reshoring Initiative, manufacturers can make the right sourcing decisions to reduce their total cost of ownership of parts and tooling, improve their balance sheet and make product innovation more effective.

Harry Moser’s career in manufacturing and related areas has spanned four decades, with twenty-two of those years as president of Charmilles Technologies Corporation, now GF AgieCharmilles. During his tenure at Charmilles Technologies Corporation, Harry transformed the company from 6th in its industry to 1st in eight years. A long-time supporter of workforce development and U.S. manufacturing, Moser was named in 2010 to the Industry Week Manufacturing Hall of Fame, and has held leadership positions with the NTMA, National Institute for Metalworking Skills' Board and the Swiss Machine Tool Society. Harry’s broad knowledge and experience in the areas of manufacturing economics, international trade and workforce development uniquely equip him to lead the reshoring effort in the U.S.
"The world is constantly changing. It makes sense to re-evaluate the costs of overseas production. The Reshoring Initiative’s Total Cost of Ownership system is a great tool that could yield some unexpected results. Reshoring cannot only save manufacturers money, but it creates American jobs, promotes economic growth and strengthens national security as well." - Doug Woods, President, Association of Manufacturing Technology
"Kudos to making the connection and seeing the value to engage Harry with the system. The overwhelming comments coming out of his presentation highlighted the importance of his work for manufacturing competitiveness." - David Boulay, President, Illinois Manufacturing Extension Center
