Prospects for U.S. Manufacturing Revival Looking Good

With the announcement rate of jobs coming from offshore up over 200% from 2016 and the much-anticipated corporate tax rate cut on the horizon, prospects for a genuine U.S. manufacturing revival are high. As the year rolls to an end, the Reshoring Initiative would like to highlight some actions that will help keep the positive momentum going.

The “Manufacturing Reshoring Survey” has been extended to Feb 20th
Please help us identify: (1) why companies produce and source so much offshore; (2) how big the price gap is, U.S. vs. offshore; and (3) what national and corporate policy changes are needed to make more reshoring viable for individual companies. Complete the survey here. Your input matters!
Back Office Reshoring Research: Projected 50% savings vs. offshore
The Reshoring Initiative and Intellilink have joined forces to conduct a research project to confirm the value proposition of reshoring back office processes (BOP) by using local US based staff and Robotic Process Automation (RPA) software. If the project is successful, the participating company will achieve higher productivity and an ongoing 50% cost savings vs. offshore outsourcing. The U.S. will have the potential to bring back up to one million BOP jobs. We are seeking a suitable company to participate in the study. Find project details and participation benefits here.
Long-term planning needed
In conjunction with the survey, the Initiative is working on a national policy Toolkit to improve U.S. competitiveness. We are seeking other organizations to partner with us in refining the program and presenting it to the administration and Congress. Please visit the Competitiveness Toolkit blog to see if you can help. Also see Industry Week: 40% Increase in US Manufacturing is Achievable, for a description of the logic behind the Toolkit.
Second National Reshoring Award
Submit your reshoring case for the 2018 Award competition sponsored by PMA (Precision Metalforming Association) and the Initiative. We can help you reshore now, in time to meet the September 1, 2018 deadline. The Reshoring Initiative is discussing having similar Reshoring Awards for other industries. Contact us with ideas.
Remember to buy Made in USA
You can find in Advanced Search companies that have reshored, or use a USA shopping guide, such as AAM’s holiday gift shopping guide.
National Apprenticeship Week

Apprenticeship programs are accelerating across the country in response to the skilled workforce shortage. Two excellent events in Washington, DC reported on recent successes:

  • The Transatlantic Apprenticeship Exchange Forum organized by the Urban Institute and Franklin Partnerships on November 14 pushed for expanding the U.S. apprentice population to five million. The Forum highlighted the surge in apprenticeships in the UK, a country with problems similar to ours. Meritize presented its program of apprenticeship loans, which would achieve results similar to the Initiative’s long-standing loan program recommendations. See the 5th item on the page.
  • Pathways to Swiss-inspired Apprenticeships in the USA was organized by the Swiss Embassy on November 16. Excellent insight into the Swiss apprenticeship program and how companies and local organizations are implementing similar programs in the U.S.
